Our Story
Ecology tells us that Yarrow is a healer; it is the plant that binds the wound. It is an ancient architecture of protection. We carry that lineage into our work, treating language as a discipline of resistance.
Yarrow is a digital home for essays and columns spanning film, politics, lifestyle, advice and opinions.
How we tell stories determines the futures we permit ourselves to imagine. For so long our public life has been curated by institutions that function as the police of what’s possible. They dictate which harms we are supposed to endure and which truths are too radical to speak. Creating dull and stagnant narrative ecosystems that define everything around us. Yarrow is here to pierce through this consensus.
“You got to make your own worlds. You got to write yourself in.”- Octavia E. Butler
We take this mandate literally. To rival the legacy of institutions that have failed us, we must offer a world that is more vibrant and more alive than the ones they have built. At Yarrow, we focus on narrative direction. We are concerned with the life an idea takes once it enters the public landscape - who it services and what it demands.
We center voices at the margins because that is where the clearest sight is found.
We reject the “middle ground” when that ground is built on the silence of our communities.
We believe that a just world requires a sense of play, joy, hella wit, good things to read, and lots of community.
